Ordinarily, recap episodes face criticism from viewers as a pointless diversion, or sometimes accepted as a requirement in television in the era of regular broadcasts. This wasn't always true, but Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it through "The Ember Island Players," a popular installment in its last season which is now granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.

The full Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced recently. This includes five separate collections, and even though a set named "My Cabbages!" is certainly humorous tribute to the show's best background character, the additional releases feel a bit uninspired, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."

Drawing from installment 17 in the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this special set features these specific cards:

What makes this installment remains memorable

Fans of the series warmly cherish this particular episode, which acted as a review of the protagonist Aang and his friends' journey before the series' finale. In contrast to typical clip shows, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" did not stem due to production constraints or production issues. The creators truly wanted to offer viewers a chance to recap the overall plot, but they decided to do it creatively.

During the installment, the main characters watches a theatrical performance based on their exploits in a theater on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is factually incorrect, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It succeeds since it plays with the heroes' understanding regarding their own identities, juxtaposing them with how the world (and especially the Fire Nation citizens) views them. It contains the perfect balance of self-awareness, and it results in arguably the top rendition of the show released so far.

When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this is a great Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This particular card sells between $20 and $40 through card retailers currently, and for $29.99 you can obtain the entire Secret Lair, or alternatively $39.99 for the foil version.

Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection is available during early access events on Nov. 14 and launches globally come November 21.
