Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
