Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
