Jujutsu Kaisen: The Execution Film Aims to Resolve the Anime's Major Debate

JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not entirely an brand-new movie. Instead, the newest film from the Jujutsu Kaisen action franchise acts as a recap of the series' second installment merged with the initial episodes of its third season, which launches the Culling Games storyline from the manga series. This establishes Execution, which recently received a new trailer, the first way to see the start of the forthcoming season ahead of its premiere in early 2026. The film debuts in Japan on Nov. 7, and in North America on Dec. 5.

The Culling Games Arc

In the Culling Games storyline, Special Grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu makes his entrance into the show and is charged by jujutsu officials to eliminate his classmate Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash occurs for the very first time on the silver screen, and if the animators at the studio have something as special as episodes 40 and 41 in store for viewers this festive season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may prove to be the surprise that everyone has hoped for.

The Thunderclap Issue

"The Thunderclap sequence" from the second season is often hailed as one of the greatest sequences in anime history, in spite of all the controversy in 2023 when the episodes first debuted. It was reported that the creators were enduring crunch conditions to the extent, and the broadcast edition that aired at the time was not fully polished and reportedly not what the artists originally planned.

The Legendary Fight

The episode involves a much-hyped confrontation between two strong jujutsu users, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It boasts experimental animation, excellent direction, and dynamic fight choreography. A later physical media version allowed the team to insert new moments to flesh out the conflict. So it appeared likely Execution could improve the battle even more. However, examining the new trailer, it's hard to tell if that confrontation has received any additional treatment. It'd be a shame if it hadn't, because a moment so epic has to be experienced on the largest display with the finest quality available.

Season Two's Achievement

The sophomore season of JuJutsu Kaisen elevated the franchise to become 2024's anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were aired consecutively, it was the topic of conversation for weeks in the series' fanbase. Viewers had heard of the issues behind the scenes, which made them admire what they witnessed even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the home release, released on March 18, would feature extra content to the battle or to see if it was polished at all, and were overjoyed to see exactly that, alongside color corrections, enhanced animation, and different color grading.

The Film's Potential

But the Blu-ray can only improve what has already been presented in the television version, whereas the cinematic experience has the chance to properly present the moment with additional alterations and new animations entirely.

A Magnum Opus

As it stands, these two episodes represent the pinnacle of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by the animation team, particularly given the issues they encountered at the time. It's captured the interest of anime fans all over the world, and the Culling Games storyline is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of next year. If Mappa wants to kick off the year perfectly, showcase the anime's greatest sequence once again in cinemas with the best interpretation we've seen yet.
