Jurgen Klopp admits coming back to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is a possibility. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful near-decade reign which brought Champions League success and ending the club's long wait for three decades, currently occupies roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and providing guidance for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
The club claimed the league title in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would welcome the idea that he might come back one day. In a wide-ranging interview, he explained to his interviewer: “I said I won't manage another team on English soil. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...yes. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“I’m 58, so I might decide later on, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about which situations must arise to draw him back to management, he revealed he isn't eager for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; No desire to be during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to media briefings multiple times weekly or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, yet sharing a meal with the players having a nice chat, I appreciate that. We won a lot of games meaning regularly positive atmosphere around the place. I still have the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
Klopp was full of praise for his successor, crediting him for the tweaks which secured the championship last term. They've been defeated a string of losses across various tournaments post heavy investment, but he rubbished the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. An outstanding player. Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built balanced team. No need for concern regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly regarding the passing of Jota, whom he brought in while in charge, and the effect at the club. The Portugal international was killed in a car crash alongside his brother this past summer.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the team environment absent his presence. Putting it into words is tough about it. It was an incredible shock for all the boys too. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Being in that space which he filled completely. Dealing with that individually is difficult. Impossible.”
