Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
