Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Armed conflict at educational facility
Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in recent months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
