The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
