A comprehensive search and rescue effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Military Search and Rescue Missions Initiated

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and search planes to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine sailors, per a military release.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with repeated power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with proper safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, cycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Political measures have increased over the past months, with remarks from different leaders underscoring the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the vessels and ensure the security of the sailors.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
